Air polishing and ultrasonic scaling
Many dentists and hygienists have been using ultrasonic scaling for some time now.
As well as being gentler on the gums and therefore easier for the patient to tolerate, ultrasonic scalers save time and remove hard plaque that hand scalers simply cannot. Similarly, air polishing is more comfortable and quicker than traditional scaling, and it does not lead to postoperative sensitivity.
Research has shown that air polishing is approximately one-third less time-consuming when compared with hand instrumentation and rubber cup polishing. The same study also found that using an air polisher can also cause less fatigue because there is no need to apply any pressure across dozens of surfaces, unlike with a rubber cup polisher.
One of the latest advances in scale and polish are units that combine both technologies into one. The UC500L Scaler and Air Polisher from BA International is an example of this and has been built with functionality that provides an ultra modern approach for prevention, cleaning and minimally invasive prophylaxis treatments.
