Ledermix paste is used for the relief of pulpal pain and inflammation in patients with deep cavities close to or involving the tooth nerve.(1) It does this by combining the antibiotic action of demeclocycline and the anti-inflammatory action of triamcinolone acetonide.
Ledermix is a valuable tool in the treatment of patients with irreversible pulpitis1. Irreversible pulpitis is when inflammation has completely damaged the pulp and the pulp cannot be saved. For the emergency management of such cases, Ledermix Dental Paste is applied to the exposed pulp using a cotton wool pellet. The cavity is then closed capped with a temporary dressing.
This will provide the patient with reliable pain relief until they come back about a week later for the next stage of root canal treatment.(1,2)
Because Ledermix paste is water-soluble, it is easily rinsed out of the canal once any infected/dead pulp has been removed and final root canal therapy is ready to commence.
As well as providing pain relief and reducing inflammation, using Ledermix for temporary root canal obturation can prevent bacteria from reappearing in the canal space and reduce post-operative pain.(3)
Ledermix paste can be used in conjunction with calcium hydroxide (as an approximate 50:50 mixture) in order to improve the overall disinfection of the root canal system.(3)
Ledermix Dental Paste contains the active ingredients demeclocycline hydrochloride and the antibiotic triamcinolone acetonide. The other ingredients are calcium chloride, zinc oxide, sodium sulphite anhydrous (E221), trolamine, macrogol 3000, macrogol 400, sodium calcium edetate, colloidal anhydrous silica and purified water.(4)
Ledermix Dental Paste is a prescription-only medicine. It can only be purchased and administered to patients by suitably qualified GDC-registered professionals and cannot be bought over the counter by patients.
Ledermix is contraindicated in children under the age of 12, due to the possibility of tetracycline staining(4). There is no data to support the use of Ledermix in children over 12 years of age, therefore its use cannot be recommended4. There is no specific data available on the use of Ledermix in pregnancy, however Ledermix is not recommended during pregnancy and in women of child-bearing potential not using contraception.(4)
